SPEWA YP Sundowner – 11 April 2013 14 May 2013

Guest Speaker: Kyle Graves, Drilling Advisor, Apache Corporation

The SPE YPs of Perth enjoy their sundowners throughout the year but this time the YP committee felt that additional value could be found in having a guest speaker. Believe it or not, an interesting and engaging guest speaker can be hard to find but there was no doubt when the idea of Kyle Graves came to the table.

Kyle is the Drilling Advisor at Apache Corporation here in Australia. He has almost 30 years experience in the contractor, service and operating sectors of the petroleum industry and has served these roles in various international placements. Kyle’s experience, coupled with his zest for mentoring young professionals makes him the ideal candidate to convey his ‘nuggets’ to the YPs of today.

This is exactly what Kyle did. His presentation “If Only I Knew Then What I Know Now” illustrated Kyle’s top 10 nuggets on how YPs should find balance in their career expectations and goals.

Nuggets such as “Work to Live, Don’t Live to Work” and “Know your Limitations” were explained but the overall theme was nugget number one, “Be a professional”.

Now how long would you expect a presentation to go for? 15, 20, or maybe even 30 minutes? Kyle’s presentation went for 40 minutes and even at the end of the presentation, people remained on the edge of their seat, engaged in his advice and wanting to hear more.

The event was a great success, with thanks going to Kyle, the venue: The Terrace Lounge and the YP sub-committee for their efforts in putting everything together.
